-- The Boston Traveler, December 18, 1875

"From the beginning, what has made Georgetown, MA special is the spirit of community evidenced by the many volunteers who come forward when a project is in need of assistance. It is this spirit that retains the feel of a small town and is its attraction."

-- Gloria Maina
The Town of Georgetown, MA is located in northern Essex County, between the Merrimack River Valley and the communities bordering Plum Island Sound.

Georgetown, MA was originally settled in 1639 and was at that time part of Rowley. In 1838, Georgetown was set off and incorporated as a town. The seeds for Georgetown?s incorporation as a town were sowed around 1700 when a sizable number of families built homes in the western area of Rowley. This area would become the modern day Georgetown, MA.

In the 1800s, Georgetown, MA?s primary industry was shoemaking. Later, other types of manufacturing fueled Georgetown?s economy as well as the ice cutting industry.

Today, Georetown, MA is still widely forested, with many acres of state forest land and features small town rural living within reach of employment centers via Route 95 and 97 to 495, and a location handy to nearby seaport, recreational areas, New Hampshire, and Maine. While Georgetown, MA has industrial development areas still available adjacent to Route 95, it also boasts a small downtown, which includes a thriving antiques center, an organ manufacturing company and a supermarket. The town also has an expanding public golf and country club. Georgetown, MA residents organize an annual Georgetown Days celebration during the weekend preceding the Fourth of July, including food, crafts, rides, entertainment and fireworks for the whole family.
