Salem, Massachusetts is a city of 40,407, located 16 miles north of Boston in the beautiful North Shore area of the Bay State.
Salem was first settled and incorporated as a town in 1626. Originally, it was named Naumkeag, a name taken from the American Indian name for the nearby Naumkeag River. In 1629, the town was renamed Salem, which was derived from the Hebrew word ?shalom,? meaning peace. For some time, this settlement was also known as ?Salem Town? while the modern day Danvers was known as ?Salem Village.? In 1836, Salem was incorporated as a city.
Salem is best known for an unfortunate event in American history, the Salem witch trials, which took place in 1692 and led to the deaths of 20 accused witches.
Salem became a major American trading port, doing extensive shipping to and from the East Indies. This economic boon led to growth in population and wealth, and in the late 18th century, Salem was the sixth largest city in the United States. In 1914, hundreds of buildings were destroyed in a fire.
Salem is also known for its numerous federal-style houses, designed by architect Samuel McIntire, as well as for being the birthplace of author Nathaniel Hawthorne.
